Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is shaping up to be a monumental sequel to Oppenheimer, and the first trailer makes one thing clear: this isn’t just another Nolan film, it could be Nolan’s film. After winning the Oscars with a dialogue-heavy historical epic, Nolan abruptly returns to spectacle, myth and large-scale action, and the result looks absolutely stunning.

From the trailer alone, the scale is unprecedented. Nolan has always worked big, but this feels like a whole new level – an epic in the truest sense of the word. If Oppenheimer proved he could dominate with restraint, The Odyssey seems ready to overwhelm purely through ambition. It really feels like this could be this generation’s Lawrence of Arabia.

The cast is absurdly stacked. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, supported by an army of stars including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, John Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, and many more. This is one of the most high-profile ensembles in years, and somehow it doesn’t feel like stunt casting – it feels deliberate and epic.

What’s particularly exciting is that this marks Nolan’s first real dive into fantasy. Cyclops, mermaids, mythological madness, it’s all there. Nolan is generally known for basing high concepts in realism, and seeing him apply this philosophy to ancient myths is fascinating. Even from brief glimpses, the practical craftsmanship stands out: massive sets, detailed costumes, and a tangible physicality that Nolan refuses to compromise on.

The five-minute preview shown before Avatar only adds to the hype. Almost no dialogue, just images and music so powerful they do all the talking. It’s the kind of insight that can’t be explained because it isn’t necessary. You already know you’re looking at something special.

More trailers will come, of course, but honestly, they don’t need to sell any harder. From the casting to the scale to Nolan’s track record, The Odyssey seems inevitable. Let’s call it now: This is a future Best Picture winner. Rate it for the 2027 Oscars.

At this point, Nolan isn’t just making great films: he’s establishing himself on the Mount Rushmore of modern-day directors. And The Odyssey looks like the movie that makes that impossible to argue with.
