One of the most iconic and enduring horror franchises of all time is back: Scream 7 has officially released its first trailer, and there’s a lot to unpack. This one has as much behind-the-scenes drama as it does on-screen suspense.
The Scream saga has had quite a journey. The first three films are horror kings: smart, sharp, and full of iconic kills. After a long hiatus, Scream 4 managed to revive the franchise, then another hiatus brought us Scream 5 and Scream 6. The latter two leaned more into brutal, modern slashers with a younger cast – “the Core Four” – while mixing in returning legacy characters.
But after Scream 6, things took a complicated turn. Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise due to political statements, and Jenna Ortega also left the franchise. With the departure of both Carpenter sisters – the emotional heart of the last two entries – Scream 7 faces an uphill battle to regain fans’ trust.
Now, enter the new trailer – and it’s one wild ride.
Back to where it all began
The trailer opens in a familiar location: Stu Macher’s house. Only this time, it’s been transformed into a hip Airbnb, and naturally, things go horribly wrong once Ghostface shows up. The difference here is clear: this film is entirely about Sidney Prescott.
While the last two opuses pushed Neve Campbell to the side, Scream 7 puts her back in the center. She’s joined by her daughter, Tatum (a touching nod to her best friend from the original film), and Joel McHale as her police officer husband – although it already looks like his death is spoiled in the trailer.
There’s a major tease that Matthew Lillard could return – either as Stu Macher himself or in some twisted legacy form. The trailer even ends with his iconic line from the original: “This is going to be fun.” It remains to be seen whether this is a genuine marketing mistake or simply clever.
One killer, one connection
Unlike Scream 6, which featured three Ghostfaces, this trailer suggests a return to basics: one killer, one motive, and a deeply personal connection to Sidney. It seems more intimate, more focused and perhaps more emotional.
If Stu Macher is truly back, this could be an incredible closure moment. But it’s also a risky decision: fans are already expecting it. If the reveal is too obvious, it might fall flat. The smartest play might be to use Stu as a red herring while introducing someone new to keep the mystery alive.
Final Thoughts
Despite the controversy surrounding its production, the trailer for Scream 7 looks solid. Ghostface seems more ruthless than ever – continuing the darkest, most violent streak in recent films. The setting, the nostalgia, and the focus on Sidney all suggest a film that wants to come full circle in a big way.
As a long-time fan, I’m cautiously optimistic. The original Scream remains one of my favorite horror films of all time, and there’s something exciting about seeing the franchise try to come full circle. Here’s hoping Scream 7 can pull off a few surprises and give Sidney Prescott the finale she deserves.
Ghostface returns in February – and I’ll be there, popcorn in hand.
