Finish it!
The highly anticipated trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 – The rest of the 2021 restart which has rekindled the interest in the longtime franchise – just abandoned, and although it is filled with potential, it is not entirely fans of impeccable victory. However, there are a lot to be excited, especially if the filmmakers play their cards correctly.
Let’s talk about the trailer. It’s solid. Not bad by any means. But after the trailer incredibly excited and well scored from the film 2021, it simply did not hit so hard. The choice of music, in particular, has somehow killed energy. A trailer as this one lives or dies by its rhythm, and it did not build the momentum it needed.
But vibes aside, the content of the trailer suggests a larger and more bloody film. We get our first overview of a multitude of new characters – Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban), Baraka, Shao Kahn, Kitana, Jade, Smoke – and many favorite fans like Liu Kang, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Jax, Shang Tsung, and yes, even Kano, who once again incredible. The costume design is absolutely on all levels. Everyone looks like a loyal budget recreation of their video game counterpart.
The big narrative change seems to focus on Johnny Cage. It is clear that it is the focal point here, which could mean Cole Young – which pulled a mixed reaction from the last time from the fans – takes a rear seat. Whether it is a permanent pivot or a smart meal remains to be seen. But it is Johnny’s film, and Karl Urban seems to look hard at the character.
Now the big question: is it finally the film of the tournament? It’s a bit cloudy. Since the trailer, it seems that we are in the “training and configuration” phase, with the real tournament potentially saved for a third film. It is well if the journey happens there is satisfactory. Fans want the tournament, but they will wait – as long as you keep us hooking.
Speaking of hooks: combat scenes. Let’s talk about what should improve. The first film was promising, but the fights were too short, too few and sometimes too clean. This suite must intensify it. Give us longer and more brutal battles. Give us appropriate deaths – and not just one or two flashy killed. And for the love of the older gods, give us a lateral shift combat scene. Just one. It is a direct tribute to the games and honestly, not difficult to achieve. The fans lost their heads.
Director Simon Mcquaud returns for the second round, and I hope he took the comments of the fans to heart. The ingredients of something really special are all here. If the action delivers, the character presents lands and the intrigue holds together, it could be the deadly film of Kombat that we all expected.
This time, we can see it in theaters – viscous restrictions have buried the box office numbers for the first film, despite its solid streaming performance. But Mortal Kombat 2 obtains the complete theatrical deployment, and you can bet that it will look like killer in IMAX. You can feel the confidence of the studio in it-they have deployed the trailer with a day multimedia blitz. That said something. They believe in it.
We will see how everything will meet when the film falls in October. Shao Kahn looks like a beast, and if he is the big bad guy, you better let him wreak havoc. Kill people. Crush skulls. Bring pain.
Final verdict on the trailer? Solid start. Not perfect. But if the film brings warmth to the right places, Mortal Kombat 2 could be a good time.
